A 44MP full-frame color camera that sits between the ASI2400MC and ASI6200MC

Why we like the ASI4400MC Pro:

  • Full frame in one shot: the 36 × 24mm sensor frames about 4.2° × 2.8° on a 490mm refractor, so targets like the Veil or the Andromeda Galaxy fit with room around them, in color, with no filter wheel.
  • A balanced pixel size: 4.4µm pixels and 44MP land between the ASI2400MC's 5.94µm and the ASI6200MC's 3.76µm, which matches typical 400 to 800mm refractors without huge files.
  • Modern conveniences built in: a UV/IR cut window, a switchable window heater against dew and frost, and push-pull screws to correct sensor tilt.
  • Worth knowing: ZWO's glow suppression greatly reduces, but doesn't fully remove, sensor glow, so take dark frames. Full frame needs a telescope with a flat 44mm image circle and 2-inch filters. You'll also need 12V power and a computer or ASIAIR.

The ZWO ASI4400MC Pro is a cooled one-shot-color astronomy camera built on Sony's back-illuminated full-frame IMX366 sensor. ZWO added it in 2025 to fill the gap between the ASI2400MC Pro and the ASI6200MC Pro. It's for imagers with a full-frame-capable refractor who want wide, detailed color images without a filter wheel. Two-stage cooling lowers the sensor 30–35°C below ambient, a 14-bit ADC gives over 13 stops of dynamic range, and read noise drops to about 1.1e⁻ above gain 136. The body weighs 700g (1.54lb).

What you can image

  • Whole nebula complexes: the full Veil Nebula loop, the Heart and Soul, the North America and Pelican together, and the Orion region. On a 250mm RedCat 51 (48mm image circle) the field is about 8.2° × 5.5° at 3.6″ per pixel.
  • Big galaxies with context: the Andromeda Galaxy with M32 and M110, the Triangulum Galaxy, and M81 and M82 with NGC 3077. On the 490mm ZWO FF70 the field is about 4.2° × 2.8° at 1.85″ per pixel.
  • Detail across a wide frame: the Rosette, the Eagle and the Cygnus Wall. On the 770mm FF110 the field is about 2.7° × 1.8° at 1.18″ per pixel.
  • Emission nebulae from the city: with a 2-inch dual-band filter, hydrogen-alpha and OIII targets from a light-polluted backyard.

How it works

A color filter over the sensor's pixels records red, green and blue in every frame, so stacking software turns your exposures straight into a color image. The camera connects to a computer or an ASIAIR Plus over USB 3.0 and runs its cooler from 12V (ZWO recommends 12V at 3–5A, 5.5 × 2.1mm plug, center positive, or an 11–14V lithium battery). Two USB 2.0 ports on the back power and control a guide camera or focuser.

The sensor sits 17.5mm behind the M54 front thread. The included M54-M48 (21mm) and M48-M48 (16.5mm) extenders bring that to the 55mm most full-frame flatteners and reducers expect, and an M48-M42 adapter fits M42 telescopes, as ZWO's chart below shows. If stars in one corner aren't round, the three push-pull screw pairs on the front adjust sensor tilt with the included hex key.

Using it in Colorado

  • Dark-site trips: a full-frame color camera on a short refractor is ideal for the Milky Way's big nebula fields from places like the Westcliffe area or Great Sand Dunes.
  • Front Range skies: add a 2-inch dual-band filter in an M54 filter drawer and emission nebulae become practical from Denver.
  • Cold, dry nights: the window heater (about 5W, switchable in software) keeps frost off on winter nights, and you can turn it off on mild nights to save power.

ZWO ASI4400MC Pro FAQ

Is the ASI4400MC Pro good for beginners?

It's easy to run, since it's one-shot color, but full frame asks more of the telescope: a flat 44mm image circle, careful spacing and a solid mount. Most people come to it after an APS-C camera such as the ASI2600MC Pro.

ASI4400MC Pro or ASI2400MC Pro?

Same field of view. The ASI2400MC Pro has bigger 5.94µm pixels and a 100ke⁻ full well, a good match for short, fast scopes, and has no amp glow. The ASI4400MC Pro has nearly twice the pixels for finer detail on 400–800mm refractors, plus a UV/IR cut window and tilt adjustment.

ASI4400MC Pro or ASI6200MC Pro?

The ASI6200MC Pro adds resolution (62MP, 3.76µm) and a 16-bit ADC, which pays off on longer focal lengths, at $1,000 more and with larger files. On scopes under about 600mm, the ASI4400MC Pro's larger pixels are usually the better match.

Does it have amp glow?

ZWO's hardware glow suppression keeps it low, but a small amount can remain. Dark frames taken at the same gain, exposure and temperature remove it.

Which filters fit?

2-inch filters, either in the ZWO M54 filter drawer or a 2-inch filter wheel. The built-in UV/IR cut window means you don't need a separate IR-cut filter.
